go to recipe

One of the best ways to get thick, strong, delicious chili to the table in the shortest amount of time is to make it on the stove. Ground beef seasoned with easy homemade chili seasoning and cooked with sautéed onions, bell peppers and diced tomatoes for the perfect comfort food recipe.

It's a great recipe to satisfy that last-minute chili craving when it hits. That's because it can be done, from start to finish, in just 30 minutes!

Though it might be hard to believe because this chili is made with a variety of ingredients. However, it's a full-bodied recipe that packs a ton of flavor into every bite, even when cooked in such a short time.

As much as I love the taste ofClay Pot Pepperthat's been cooking all day, or a bowl of Campfire Chili that's been made in a cast iron pot over an open fire, this recipe has surprisingly fantastic flavor and texture.

It's a great recipe to make on a busy night in the middle of winter. However, it also makes a great addition to your next tailgate or Super Bowl party.

Go ahead for more flavor

You can even prepare it ahead of time and toss it in your slow cooker to warm up and stay warm until your guests arrive. And like all soup recipes, this chili just gets better with time.

In fact, I prefer to make it a few days in advance before I want to serve it. It's a great recipe for meal prep or when you need to use fresh ground beef before it expires.

So when you go to help yourself from a bowl, the flavors have had time to meld together perfectly. However, there are a few tips to make this quick and easy chili recipe taste amazing no matter when you eat it.

Pepper making tips

1. Ground Beef

When it comes to choosing which ground beef is best to use for your chili, it all comes down to preference. If you want maximum flavor without making your chili greasy, choose a fat-to-fat ratio of 85/15.

Due to the quick cooking time, some fat is needed in the meat for flavor. However, you don't want to use ground beef with more than 15% fat, or the flavor will be affected.

However, due to the rising cost of ground beef in the grocery store, it can become prohibitively expensive to buy meat with less fat. If that's the case, you can still make the chili. Just be sure to drain the meat well before adding the other ingredients.

And if you find ground lean sirloin, you can use that too. Bear in mind, however, that the flavor will not be as complex compared to a high-fat ground beef.

2. Chili beans

Since this recipe is ready so quickly, it is best to use high-quality canned peppers. This is not the time for regular unseasoned beans.

Instead, buy beans labeled chili beans. These beans are pre-seasoned and are the perfect addition to any chili recipe, but especially a stovetop chili recipe that is ready to eat in just 30 minutes.

I usually spend the extra 50 cents to buy a brand name variety. However, generic or private label varieties can also be used.

And for those who like their pepper a little spicy, go ahead and buy medium or hot pepper flavored beans. However, no matter what kind of hot beans you buy, don't drain the beans.

The flavored sauce inside the can will add flavor to the chili.

3. Sauté the vegetables

When it comes to which vegetables to add to chili, diced onions and green peppers make the preferred list by default. However, be sure to allow extra time to sauté the veggies for maximum flavor.

Heating the vegetables until they are soft draws out all the hidden flavors inside. This simple step makes the difference between a good chili and a great chili.

4. The liquid

The liquid in this chili recipe comes from several sources. First, you're going to use the liquid that's inside the two cans of beans.

You will then add tomato sauce and beef stock to the pot. Although you can substitute chicken broth, beef broth will give you more flavor.

However, as always, I recommend that you buy a broth that is low in sodium so that the peppers are not too salty. You can always add salt later.

5. Easy Homemade Pepper Seasoning

There is no need to go to the store to buy a packet of chili pepper seasoning. Instead, it's easy to make your own with just a few basic spices you probably already have in your cupboard.

And it all starts with chili powder. Chili powder is a combination of spices that will give your chili that familiar flavor.

However, to make it a chili spice, you also need to add ground cumin. Then mix in some salt, pepper and cayenne pepper to taste and your seasonings are ready to be added to the chili.

It's much healthier to make your own chili seasoning. You know exactly what's in it and it has no fillers or preservatives.
